remote broadcast needs change according to the event or context. possibilities for remote broadcast setups include:

remote broadcasts can also include news gathering / recording interviews, dj / turntables / live audio / PA setup, etc. KCHUNG has equipment specifically set aside for members to use in remote broadcasts - once you know what you need, ask a station manager or staff member about borrowing.

figuring out exactly what equipment to bring depends on what you plan to do, but in general, you'll need a computer with nicecast installed, and/or a transmitter and a mixer / audio setup. the transmitters all accept 1/8" line level audio inputs (from computer or mixer headphone outputs, for example).

online streaming for remote broadcasts

KCHUNG uses a second stream for remote broadcasts and special events. (listen here). to use this stream, you will need a computer with audio input (if the source of audio is anything outside the computer) and an internet connection at the location from which you will be broadcasting. there is a macbook with separate 1/8" audio input and output available to borrow for remote broadcasts that is already configured with the necessary software, but you can also install and run on your own computer if it's easier. we use the application "nicecast" to connect to the streaming server. some of the information below is also covered more generally in the wiki under nicecast.

before starting the broadcast, you will need to configure a few settings:

1.) launch nicecast and click Window>Nicecast Server to configure the server info as follows (important! enter exactly as shown):

name: kchung mobile broadcast
server type: shoutcast
account:
password: eORX7okQgn
server address: s2.voscast.com
port: 9208
mount point:
public url: [automatic]

2.) click Window>Nicecast Broadcast and click the "Quality" tab to configure the stream quality settings as follows:

bitrate: 96 Kbps
sample rate: 44.100 KHz
channels: stereo
CPU usage / quality: (set the slider somewhere between halfway and "most")

3.) click the "info" tab and enter some description of the broadcast (location, event name, etc). this cannot be changed after broadcast begins.

4.) create a "NowPlaying.txt" file if you would like to share other info along with the stream (this can be changed after broadcast begins)

5.) click the "source" tab to select the input (system input, microphone, line-in, or application, etc)

6.) click Window>Nicecast Archiving to configure the settings for recording / archiving as shown here if you want to use nicecast to do the recording (as opposed to some other method)

when you are ready to start the online stream

follow these steps in order:

1.) click this link to stop the KCHUNG news loop that plays on the second stream when there is no remote broadcast (note that these are active links, and may interrupt whatever is currently streaming):

2.) in nicecast, click "start broadcast"

when you are ready to stop the online stream

1.) click "stop broadcast" in nicecast (this is important!), then quit nicecast

2.) click this link to turn the KCHUNG news loop back on:

archiving / recording remote broadcasts

just as all KCHUNG broadcasts are recorded in the chinatown studio, we try to record and archive all remote broadcasts. this can be done either directly from nicecast using the program's archive function, or using another application such as audacity to record audio as it comes into the computer. broadcasts can also be archived using a digital audio recorder, phone, cassette recorder, etc—bypassing the need for a computer.

if you plan to use both online broadcast and a transmitter, make sure you have the appropriate audio inputs and outputs and connecting cables to route the sound: an example setup would be:

  1. audio from microphone to mixer
  2. line out from mixer headphone jack to computer audio input
  3. computer streams and archives using nicecast
  4. line out from computer headphone jack to transmitter line input

many possibilities for configuring this depending on what is needed.

once the remote broadcast is completed and you have the audio files, bring them to the station and transfer them to the studio computer. make sure all files are correctly named (i.e. show_title_name_of_event-month.day.year.mp3, with only the one hyphen between the name and the date, no special characters). convert any high-resolution (wav / aiff etc) files to mp3, place them in a folder named with the broadcast date (year-month-day), and put the entire folder (mp3's only) into the "archive" folder on the desktop. put any high resolution files into the "wav archive" folder on the desktop. these files will be automatically uploaded to the KCHUNG archive and accessible after the next broadcast day. if you have any questions about the archiving / uploading process, ask a station manager or email [email protected].
